11.2005 ISAGA - International Simulation and Gaming Association Logo  [ view logo ][ view website ]
The International Simulation and Gaming Association (ISAGA) is an international organization for scientists and practitioners developing and using simulation, gaming and related methodologies. Simulation and games are powerful education and research tools that are in my opinion terribly underutilitzed - especially in public schools. Even when educational games are employed, it's rare that they are utilized as much more than techniques to liven-up a traditional lesson or dress-up a multiple choice test. The real power of a well designed educational game is its ability to structure play and teach students to think. When done right, the teacher disappears from the from the front of the room and becomes more of an observer than the observed.

2.15.2004 Epcom/Sun Microsystems - eLearning Module  [ view - pw:"mark", login:"test"]
Here is a Flash based eLearning module I developed. The interface is entirely independent of the content and so the same interface can be (and is) used unchaged from one eLearning course to the next. I was under contract with Epcom to develop this module for Sun Microsystems. The project posed a special challenge because of the extremely tight deadline ( I had just a few of weeks to put it all together). Epcom is a Troy Michigan based consultancy who is the founding SUSE training partner in North America. I've worked with on various projects with Epcom since 1993.

Here are four Flash-based sales and electronic training tools used by Neolytica (a Dow Chemical venture) sales staff to assist when explaining the Neolytica service model to potential new customers and train Neolytica service reps on how to use the administrative interface. These tools were released via CD to Neolytica sales staff and they are large. Neolytica provides analytical testing services through a web-based Lab Interface Management System (LIMS) and account/billing management system. These web-based systems are used by analytical testing labs and their customers to securely co-ordinate and track material samples and through often extensive chemical testing applications. I designed the user procedures, interface, and architecture for the commerce website and assisted in its development and implementation (javascript coded .ASP environment driven by a SQL Server database).

02.10.2001 Web Based Survey [ view ]
For this project a series of questionnaires were needed by the University of Michigan to evaluate the Pager-based Traveler Notification system in a way that could provide us with continual feedback of the system. I put together a Flash interface so that we could administer a survey from the web. I created a generic "frame" in Flash 4 into which individual surveys could be loaded. By setting key variables such as the number of questions, question skip patterns, and reveal conditions each questionnaire had the potential to be written and submitted by someone unfamiliar with Flash ActionScripting. I worked along with Tom Reed to manage the FilemakerPro database server in my office at UofM.

Note: log-in as "TReed"

10.11.2000 Pager-based Traveler Notification System [ view ]
This system was deisgned with Dr. Tom Reed for use in the University of Michigan's Pager-based Traveler Notification system test. The Flash (Flash4) interface was used by dispatchers at the Michigan Department of Transportation; Intelligent Transportation Center in Detroit. Traffic incidents and delays were input into the interface and then alerts were sent out to a test bed of travelers via TAP software to traveler's pagers based on route specific information in the database. The interface was also used as a means for drivers to submit their time and origin-destination for which they wanted to be notified.

Note: The O-D pathfinding and road condition indicators of this interface is only fully functional in Flash 4 (not Flash 5 or 3)

12.31.1995 Computer "Multi-Plex" Station Design and Interior Design [ view Digital Ops photos ]
Originally I started designing computer stations for my company Digital Ops. I designed and built an 8 station, two level, industrial strength steel, pipe, grating, and plexiglass construct to accommodate computers, 21" monitors, sub-woofer-powered seating, DJ lighting, power supplies and an analogue 8x8 intercom system. The intercom system was designed by an ex-Navy "ET" Bernie Worby and I did most of the wiring. The "cube" as it was nicknamed saved space, allowed most every player to make eye contact with one another, created a central area from which all stations could be accessed simultaneously, and created a high tech encompassing feel for people in the station.

Since then I have designed and built a few other one and two station designs for my office and living room. I've also designed (but not yet built) a station that might be used by Zero Latency Corp. (ZeLat). This is a not yet funded company that is still being put together. Additionally I've done all the work on the ZeLat web placeholder page which is intended for high end computer users (fast machines, fast connections).
